Proteomics within EVGN

The accelerating determination of genome sequences and their interpretation (genomics) has brought with it one of the most daunting challenges to modern bioscience – the concomitant determination of the structure, function and expression of all of the corresponding proteins that are encoded therein. The importance of measuring proteins has become increasingly clear, as neither the genomic sequence nor the transcriptional profile can be directly correlated to protein expression and post-translational modifications are known to be instrumental in many human diseases. The promise of proteomics is to perform large scale-studies of gene expression at the protein level, providing the basis for a detailed understanding of pathophysiological mechanisms and leading to the discovery of potential targets for drug development. The proteomic platform within the EVGN will provide access to state-of-the-art technologies for protein separation, quantification, and characterization such as difference in-gel electrophoresis (DIGE) and high-resolution tandem mass spectrometers capable of various ion fragmentation methods, including electron-transfer dissociation (ETD).
