First EVGN Summer School
MAASTRICHT First Summer School launched by the ...
Young European vascular biology PhD students will have the chance to experiment a hands-on approach to vascular research, during the first European Vascular Genomics Network (EVGN) Summer School scheduled for July 3rd -7th, 2005. Venue of the event will be Vaeshartelt Castle, in Maastricht.
The five-days lectures will be introduced by professor Alain Tedgui from INSERM - EVGN President and Scientific Cordinator - who will explain the program and meet the participants. Selected workshops and tutorial groups will complete the students' preparation.
As cardiovascular diseases account for 40% of the deaths in Western EU countries (and are close to 60% in the less developed European countries), the EVGN Summer School will prove critical in offering future scientists a deep understanding of the problem.
Some of the lectures, in fact, will focus on key issues leading to atherosclerosis, such as inflammatory processes, signal transduction and cell-cell communication within the vessels' wall. Other seminars will examine thoroughly the available therapeutic options. Considerable emphasis will be given to endothelial dysfunctions, which represent both the early and critical event leading to atherosclerosis, and a promising therapeutic target. Daily contacts with local scientists within their laboratories will provide deeper insight on selected topics.
By integrating post-genomic approaches with top-quality techniques in biomedicine and biotechnology, EVGN aims at disseminating knowledge on basic and applied research, in order to implement both the diagnosis and the treatment of cardiovascular diseases.
